Single Click Shutdown for Windows OS

Did you know that in Windows XP you can shut down your computer from the (eventually DOS prompt) command line box? Moreover, you can do this by clicking your mouse only once.

All you need to do is... right-click on an empty Desktop spot -> select New -> Shortcut -> type shutdown followed by a space, and then enter one or more of the parameters listed below -> click Next -> type a suggestive name for your new shortcut -> finally, click Finish.

This is the Shutdown.exe (located in %systemroot%System32, usually C:WindowsSystem32) syntax:

shutdown [-i|-l|-s|-r|-a] [-f] [-m \computername] [-t xx] [-c "Text"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy]>

Valid command line switches:

-a = Abort system shutdown in progress ONLY IF the -t xx timeout option was already set to ANY value other than 0. ALL switches except -l and -m are ignored during abort.

-c "Text" = Text comment (case insensitive) to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. MUST be enclosed between quotes. Maximum allowed 127 ASCII characters.

-d [u][p]:xx:yy = Reason code for shutdown:
u = User code.
p = Planned shutdown code.
xx = Major reason code. Positive integer number less than 256.
yy = Minor reason code. Positive integer number less than 65536.

-f = Force running applications to close without warning.

-i = Display the shutdown interface (GUI). MUST be the first option!

-l = Log off the current user of the local computer (default action). Can NOT be used with the -m option unless the current user has Sysadmin rights, in which case the -m switch takes precedence.
-m \computername = Remote/network computer name (most always case sensitive) to log off/restart/shut down. Current user MUST have Sysadmin rights to be allowed to use this switch!

-s = Shut down the local computer.

-r = Shut down and restart (reboot) the local computer.

-t xx = Set shutdown timer to timeout for xx seconds. IF NOT specified defaults to 20 seconds. Allowed values between 0 and 99 seconds. The -a switch is the ONLY one that CAN be used during the timeout period.

NOTE:
The dash (-) in front of these switches can be replaced by a forward slash (/).

Spaces are NOT required to separate the shutdown command from ANY following switches, but ARE required to separate ANY switch from its following parameter(s), if any.
For example:

shutdown -s -c "Shutting down!" -t 3

tells your computer to shutdown after waiting for 3 seconds while the System Shutdown window will display text above in the Message area.

Optional: after you're done creating your customized shortcut for shutdown -> right-click on it -> select Properties -> enter your desired key "combo" in the Shortcut Key box (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + End) -> click OK/Apply.
From now on just left-click on your shutdown shortcut or hit that key combination to turn off/restart/log off your computer.

Install Net Meeting

Wondering how to install Netmeeting on Windows XP? Well you don't have to install it! Why? It is already pre-installed with Windows XP, but (by design they say) it isn't linked to anywhere on your programs menu. Here is how to load it:

1: Click START then RUN
2: Enter "conf" without the quotes

That's it - now you can Netmeet to your hearts content.

Add Or Stop Programs During Startup

You can start or stop programs from executing at boot up by adding or deleting them to/from the run Keys in the Registry. Windows loads programs to start in the following order; Program listed in the Local Machine hive, then the Current User hive, then theWin.ini Run= and Load = lines. then finally programs in your Start Up folder.

To add or remove programs in the Registry
1.Open Regedit  Start-->Run-->regedit

2.Go to the desired Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunServices
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunServices

3. Add a new String Value and name it anything you like

4. For the value data, enter the path and executable for the program you want to run.

By adding the value to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive instead allows the program to start only when that user is logged on.
If you add the value to the RunOnce key the program will run once and be removed from the key by Windows.

Increase the speed of your internet connection without a new modem

As more and more people get quick connections to the internet, such as cable or ADSL, it becomes apparent to the user of a simple dial-up modem that the World Wide Web can quickly turn into the World Wide Wait. Here a trick that can help speed up your current modem without shelling out the big bucks.

There is a setting located in your windows registry called the Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU). This determines the size of the packets of data sent between your and your server. In Windows 95, this setting is has a value of 1,500 bytes when the actual size of internet packets is 1,000 bytes. This can sometimes slow things down. To remedy the situation, simply follow these steps:
In the registry editor (Start > Run > regedit.exe), navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesClassNetTrans.

In the NetTrans folder you should find another folder named "000x" in which x represents a fourth digit. Right-click on the "000x" folder and select New and StringValue. Rename the item that appears in the panel on the right side to MaxMTU, then double-click it to bring up the Edit String box and give it a velue of 1002.

Remember to keep playing with the MaxMTU value until you feel that your internet connection has greatly sped up. Some people report huge speed gains using this tricks, while others hardly notice a difference. In any case, it's definetly worth a try.

Hide 'User Accounts' from users

Go to Start/Run, and type:
GPEDIT.MSC
Open the path

User Config > Admin Templates > Control Panel
doubleclick "Hide specified Control Panel applets"
put a dot in 'enabled', then click 'Show"
click Add button,
type "nusrmgt.cpl" into the add box

Boot Or Start Computer Faster

Many computers take a lot of time to boot (or start ).This is due to many reasons.

Some slight changes can do wonders for your system:

1. Press start->run then type msconfig and press enter.

Go to the startup tab. Here you will see a list of startup items. These are all the programs that automatically start when you boot your PC. It is these that slow down the boot up process.
So uncheck all the unwanted items like ms-office, messengers other utilities that u may not need at startup). Don't uncheck your antivirus software.

Restart your Pc to and see for yourself, your pc will now boot faster....

2. A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled, but on some systems it is not, so below is the information on how to turn it on:

Go to Start Menu and Click Run
Type in regedit then click ok
Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftDfrgBootOpt imizeFunction"
Select "Enable" from the list on the right
Right on it and select "Modify"
Change the value to Y .
Reboot your Pc and see the change yourself.

3.SPEED UP BOOT BY DISABLING UNUSED PORTS.!!
You may have tried many tweaks like modifying windows XP start-up applications, prefetches, unload DLLs method, etc. And yes those methods do work for me.
I have just accidentally found out another way to give you an extra boost in windows XP's boot performance. This is done by disabling your unused devices in Device Manager. for example, if you don't have input devices that are connected to one of your USB's or COM ports, disabling them will give you an extra performance boost in booting. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> device manager Disable devices that you don't use for your PC and then restart.

Optimize Display Settings in Windows XP for better performance

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimize:

1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:

- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

MAKE YOUR MENUS LOAD FASTER

This is one of my favorite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will 'feel'. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu.

Go to Start then Run
Type 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'
Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop"
Select "MenuShowDelay"
Right click and select "Modify'
Reduce the number to around "100"
This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood.

Enable Administrator in Welcome Screen

When you install Windows XP an Administrator Account is created (you are asked to supply an administrator password), but the "Welcome Screen" does not give you the option to log on as Administrator unless you boot up in Safe Mode.
First you must ensure that the Administrator Account is enabled:

1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Administrative Tools

3. Open Local Security Policy
4. Expand Local Policies
5. Click on Security Options

6. Ensure that Accounts: Administrator account status is enabled.

Then follow the instructions from the "Win2000 Logon Screen Tweak" ie;
1.Open Control Panel
2. Open User Accounts
3. Click Change the way users log on or log off
4. Un-tick Use the Welcome Screen
5. Click Apply Options
You will now be able to log on to Windows XP as Administrator in Normal Mode.

Another Method

By default windows XP doesn't show the Administrator in the user list at the welcome screen. Here's a way to get around it.

Now head up to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersion

WinlogonSpecialAccountsUserlist

create a new DWORD entry and name it as Administrator and change its value to 1.

exit and reboot for the changes to take effect.
To change it back change its value to 0 or simply delete the key.

How to Secure your PC from Hackers

Hackers and Browser Hijacking is one area of the Net that affects everyone at some stage.

In addition to having third party utilities such as SpyBot, Anti Virus scanners and firewalls installed there are some changes that can be made to Windows 2000/XP. Below are some details to make your system safer from hackers and hijackers.

Some of these tips require editing of the Registry so it is wise to either backup the registry and/or create a Restore Point.

1. Clearing the Page File at Shutdown
Windows 2000/XP paging file (Sometimes called the Swap File) can contain sensitive information such as plaintext passwords. Someone capable of accessing your system could scan that file and find its information. You can force windows to clear out this file.

In the registry navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management and add or edit the DWORD ClearPageFileAtShutdown. Set it to 1.

Note that when you do this, the system will take much longer to shut down: a system with a really big Page File (! Gig or more) may take a minute or two longer.

2. Disable the POSIX and OS/2 Subsystem.

Windows 2000 and XP come with little-documented subsystems it at allow compatibility with UNIX and OS/2 systems These rues systems are enabled by default but so rarely used that they are best off bring disabled completely to prevent possible service hijackings.

To disable these subsystems, open the registry and navigate to HKEY LOCAL MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerSubSystems. Delete the subkeys Os2 and Posix. then reboot.

3. Never leave default passwords blank.
On installation, Windows 2000 sets up an Administrator account with total
system access and prompts for a password. Guess what: by default, it allows that password to be blank. If a user doesn't want to type a password, he can simply click Next and the system will be an open door for anyone who wants to log on. Always opt for a password of some kind when setting up the default account on a machine.

4. Disable the Guest account
Windows XP comes with a Guest account that's used for limited access, but it's still possible to do some damage with it. Disable it completely if you are not using it. Under Control Panel, select User Accounts, click on Guest Account and then select Turn Off the Guest Account.

5. Install Windows In a different directory.
Windows usually installs itself in the WINDOWS directory.
Windows NT 4 0 and 2000 Will opt for WINNT. Many worms and other rogue programs assume this to be the case and attempt to exploit those folders files. To defeat this install Windows to another directory when you're setting it up - you can specify the name of the directory during setup. WINDIR is okay; so some people use WNDWS - A few (not that many) programs may not install properly if you install Windows to another folder but t hey are very few and they are far between

6. Fake out hackers with a dummy Administrator account
Since the default account in Windows 2000 is always named Administrator, an enterprising hacker can try to break into your system by attempting to guess the password on that account. It you never bothered to put a password on that account, say your prayers.

Rather than be a sucker to a hacker, put a password on the Administrator account it you haven't done so already. Then change the name of the Administrator account. You'll still be able to use the account under its new name, since Windows identifies user accounts by a back-end ID number rather than the name. Finally, create a new account named Administrator and disable it. This should frustrate any would -be break-ins.

You can add new accounts and change the names of existing accounts in Windows 2000 through the Local Users and Groups snap in. Right-click on My Computer, select Manager, open the Local Users and Groups subtree, look in the Users folder and right-click on any name to rename it. To add a new user, right-click on the containing folder and select New User. Finally, to disable an account, double-click it, check the Account is disabled box and click OK.

Don't ever delete the original Administrator account. Some programs refuse to install without it and you might have to log in under that account at some point to setup such software. The original Administrator account is configured with a security ID that must continue to be present in the system.

7. Set the Hosts file to read-only to prevent name hijacking.

This one's from (and to a degree, for) the experts. The HOSTS file is a text file that all flavors of Windows use to hold certain network addresses that never change. When a network name and address is placed in HOSTS, the computer uses the address listed there for that network name rather than performing a lookup (which can take time). Experts edit this file to place their most commonly-visited sites into it, speeding things up considerably.

Unfortunately hijackers and hackers also love to put their own information into it - redirecting people from their favorite sites to places they don't want to go. One of the most common entries in HOSTS is local host which is set 1770.0.1. This refers to the local machine and if this entry is damaged the computer can behave very unpredictably.

To prevent HOSTS from being hijacked, set it to read-only. Go to the folder %Systemroot%system32driversetc, right-click on HOSTS, select Properties check the Read-Only box and click OK. If you want to add your own entries to HOSTS, you can unprotect it before doing so, but always remember to set it to read-only after you're done.

8. Turn off unneeded Services
Windows 2000 and XP both come with many background services that don't need to he running most of the time: Alerter,
Messenger, Server (If you're running a standalone machine with no file or printer shares), NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing, Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (the last two if you're not using Remote Desktop or NetMeeting), Remote Registry, Routing and Remote Access (if you're not using Remote Access), SSDP Discovery Service, Telnet, and Universal Plug and Play Device Host.
A good resource and instruction on which of these services can be disabled go to /http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/

9. Disallow changes to IE settings through IE
This is another anti hijacker tip. IE can be set so that any changes to its settings must be performed through the Internet icon in the Control Panel, rather than through IE's own interface. Some particularly unscrupulous programs or sites try to tamper with setting by accessing the Tools, Options menu in IE. You can disable this and still make changes to IE's settings through the Control Panel.

Open the Registry and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER SoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerRestrictions. Create or edit a new DWORD value named NoBrowserUptions and set it to 1 (this is a per-user setting). Some third-party programs such as Spybot Search And Destroy allow you to toggle this setting.

You can also keep IE from having other programs rename its default startup page, another particularly annoying form of hijacking. Browse to HKEY.CURRENT USERSoftwarePolicies MicrosoftInternet ExploreControl Panel and add or edit a DWORD, Homepage and set it to 1.

10. Disable simple
File Shares.
In Windows XP Professional, the Simple File Sharing mode is easily exploited, since it
抯 a little too easy to share out a file across your LAN (or the NET at large). To turn it off, go m My Computer, click Tools, Folder Option and the View tab, and uncheck Use Simple file sharing (Recommended). Click OK. When you do this you can access the Security tab in the Properties window for all folders; set permissions for folders; and take ownership of objects (but not in XP Home)

How to change XP Start button name

I’ve read a number of articles on the internet about changing the text on the Start button in XP. On more than one occasion I’ve seen references to a five (5) letter limitation when the button is renamed. I always wondered if this was true or just an assumption someone made because the default ‘start’ just happened to fit the button size. So, I decided to run a test and see if there really was a five character limit.

First of all just u need to do is download Resource hacker.

Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP operating systems. Its just 541Kb in the size.

First Step The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:Windowsexplorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:Windowsexplorer.exe
The category we are going to be using is String Table In Resource Hacker. Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable as shown in Fig. 02. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry

Second Step – Modify the Registry Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open: field. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Winlogon

the Right pane (Fig. 05), double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box as shown in Fig. 06. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.

How to insert important folders in Send to menu

How often do you copy songs from a CD? Or some photos from a CD?

What do you do? You select the required files and do a CTRL –C. Open the destination folder and do a CTRL-V. Here is something you can benefit time from. Customize your SEND TO MENU.

This sounds simple and you can do it in less than sixty seconds.
You can create your own BASKET.

First you’ll need access to hidden files. So change your view settings to make all hidden files visible.
Tools -> folder options -> view (tab) and select the show hidden files and folders.
go to parent drive:/documents and settings/(user name)/send to

Open up my computer and locate your most used folders.

Create a shortcut of the most used folders in SEND TO FOLDER.You can do this in a number of ways.

Right click -> send to desktop(create shortcut) and move the shortcut from the desktop to the SEND TO FOLDER

Copy the most used folder and go to SEND TO FOLDER and right click -> paste shortcut.

Also remember to rename the shortcuts to send to videos or send to potos. We don’t need confusion when we use the same later.

5. DONE.

How to Clean out the prefetch folder

Windows XP uses a system called 'prefetch' to organize and preload some of the data necessary for commonly used applications and files. A folder called prefetch is used to store the information the operating system needs to carry out this operation.
After several months of use, the prefetch folder may become quite overloaded with older references to software and files that may no longer be in use.It's a good idea to manually empty the older files out of the prefetch folder every few months or so.
To do this: Navigate to 'c:windowsprefetch' and delete all .
PF files that are older than a week or two.

How to change the Icon of any drive in My Computer

Here is a simple tweak by which you will be able to change this monotonous icon to anything you like,even your own Picture if you wish

You can put any image in place of one which I have shown,even the picture of your favourite celebrity or your dream caror your own Picture.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

1.First of all the picture you want to use should have .ico extension(if you already have a pic with .ico extension proceed to step 2).Most of the pictures we normally use have extensions like .jpg,.bmp,.png..gif etc, so you first need to convert them to one with .ico extension.This is simple.Just go here and put your original image in the 'Source Image 'section,then click on 'Generate Favicon.ico ' button to get your image with .ico extension.

2.Now go to My Computer.Suppose you want to put this icon in place of your original C: image.

[autorun]
ICON=favicon.ico

Remember that 'favicon.ico' in the second line is the name of your image file.If you have an image file with .ico extension by the name of 'abc.ico',then use that in the second line in place of 'favicon.ico'.

3.Now rename this text file as ' autorun.inf ' (without the quotes).

How to add Details tag in HTML5

The details tag allows you to add extra information that can be viewed or hidden. For example, take a look at the image below:

The details tag in a browser

When a user clicks the above message, the following information is revealed:

The details tag expanded when clicked on

Clicking the summary will hide the above message.
The Details tag is used like this:

<DETAILS>

<SUMMARY>Click here for further information</ SUMMARY >

<P>
Further information is revealed when a user clicks the summary
<BR>
Click the summary again to hide this message.

</ DETAILS >
In between two Details tags, you add a pair of Summary tags. The summary is the part that is shown to the user. Details can then be added below the Summary tags.

Sadly, only the Chrome browser supports the Details tag at the time of writing. Browsers that don't support the Details tag will simply display the whole of the information you added between the two tags, including the summary.

How to add Audio in HTML5

If you only want sound, and no video, then the new AUDIO tag is the one to use. The HTML is similar to the VIDEO tags, in that you specify a list of audio file formats. For example, take a look at the following code:

<AUDIO>

<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.mp3">
<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.ogg">
<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.wav">

</AUDIO>

Between the two AUDIO tags we have three SOURCE tags like before. This time, however, you don't need any codec information. The browser will try to play the first song on the list above. If the format is not supported, then it will try to play the second song.

You can add some attributes to the AUDIO tag:

AUTOPLAY
LOOP
CONTROLS
PRELOAD

AUTOPLAY takes the value true or false. Setting AUTOPLAY to true means the song would start playing by itself in the browser, which can be annoying. LOOP means that the song will start all over again after it has finished. Again, the values true and false can be used. Using the CONTROLS attribute with a value of true will get you the browser's in-built audio controls. They look like this in Internet Explorer 9:

Audio controls in a browser

The PRELOAD attribute takes three values: none, auto, and metadata. PRELOAD refers to the audio file itself. When you set it to none the browser won't preload the file at all. Set it to auto and the browser will decide for you, whereas a setting of metadata will load things like song title, album, artist, etc.

Here's an example of the AUDIO attributes:

<AUDIO AUTOPLAY ="false" LOOP="false" CONTROLS="true" PRELOAD="auto">

<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.mp3">
<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.ogg">
<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.wav">

</AUDIO>

If you tried the above code in Firefox then the Ogg file format would play, because Firefox doesn't support the MP3 format, due to licensing issues.

For browsers that don't support the AUDIO tag at all, then you can add some text to the above code:

<AUDIO AUTOPLAY ="false" LOOP="false" CONTROLS="true" PRELOAD="auto">

<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.mp3">
<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.ogg">
<SOURCE SRC="your_audio.wav">
YOUR BROWSER DOESN'T SUPPORT THE AUDIO TAG.

</AUDIO>

The point about the AUDIO and VIDEO tags, however, is that they work in the browser and don't need the end-user to download any third-party plugins.

How to add Video in HTML5

HTML5 introduced a new tag for videos. To insert a video into your web page you can now do this:

<VIDEO SRC="your_video.mp4"></VIDEO>

This simplifies things greatly, as previously you had to use the OBJECT and PARAM tags. Even with a YouTube video that code would look messy:

<object width="" height="">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/your_ref"></param>
<param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>
<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/your_ref_here" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="" height=""></embed>
</object>

However, Google does produce the code for you, and all you need to do is copy and paste it.

Another alternative for video is Flash. Unfortunately, not all browsers support Flash (Apple's Safari in particular.) Even for those that do, you need a plugin to watch the video.

So the VIDEO tag in HTML5 was meant to allow all browsers to display your videos. At the time of writing, though, different browsers support different video formats. Older browsers won't recognize the VIDEO tag at all. With those caveats in place, let's take a further look at the video tag.

Video Formats and Codecs

The most popular video formats are MP4 (MPEG4), FLV (Flash), OGG and AVI. A newer format is WebM. But these file endings, .mp4, .flv, .ogv, .avi, and WebM, are not actually a single file. They are known as container files. That's because a video is a combination of separate files, such as the video itself and sound tracks. There will also be files for synchronising the video with the sound, the aspect ratio, the language, video title, and a whole lot more.

The moving images part of the video will be encoded using programming code known as an algorithm. This algorithm is called the video codec. A video player decodes this algorithm (codec) and displays the moving images on your screen. There are quite a lot of video codecs out there, but the most popular are H.264, Theora, and Google's VP8.

As well as video codecs there are also separate audio codecs. The audio codec that just about everybody has heard of is MP3 (short for MPEG 1, Audio Layer 3). Others are Apple's AAC, and Vorbis.

(It must be pointed out that MP4 and MP3 are patent protected. You are usually allowed to produce video and audio files in these formats because a vendor (Microsoft, Apple, etc) has already paid for the right to use the encoder and decoder software.)

With all these different video and audio combinations, you won't be surprised to learn that browser support is patchy. For example, if you wanted to show a Flash video then people who have Macs, iPhones, and iPads won't be able to see it.

Browser patchiness is the reason why the new VIDEO tag takes a sub-tag called SOURCE. The SOURCE sub-tag lets you specify more than one container format. Take a look at this example:

<VIDEO>

<SOURCE SRC="my_video.mp4" TYPE='video/mp4; codecs="avc1.42E01E, mp4a.40.2"'>
<SOURCE SRC="my_video.webm" TYPE='video/webm; codecs="vp8, vorbis"'>
<SOURCE SRC="my_video.ogv" TYPE='video/ogg; codecs="theora, vorbis"'>

</VIDEO>

The VIDEO tag is now by itself. Between the two VIDEO tags, however, we have three SOURCE tags. After the word SOURCE you need a SRC attribute. This is the name and location of your video. Notice that the MP4 format comes first. This is to cater to your iPad users. If it's not top of the list then iPad just bails out - it only recognises one SOURCE tag. Newer version of the iPad may well correct this bug.

Notice the TYPE attribute above, though. It is split in to three parts:

TYPE='video/mp4; codecs="avc1.42E01E, mp4a.40.2" '

You need the type of video it is (video/mp4, in this case). After a semi colon you then specify the codecs. The video codec comes first, followed by the audio codec. The two are separated by a comma. The quotation marks are need. The TYPE above is surrounded by single quotes, one at the start and one at the end. The codecs need their own quote marks, which are double quotes above. You can do it the other way round, though:

TYPE="video/mp4; codecs='avc1.42E01E, mp4a.40.2' "

In the line above double quotes are on the outside and single quotes on the inside.

Video can be a very complicated subject. If you don't want to go to all the trouble, then YouTube can convert your videos and provide the code to copy and paste into your web page.

How to add Data List in HTML5 Forms

Another type of list you can use is a Data List. This is new in HTML5. The Data List is like a drop down list of options, only the dropdown part doesn't appear until you start typing. The items on your list then appear, allowing the user to select an item. It is only supported in Firefox and Opera, at the time of writing. Here's what it looks like before you start typing:

An HTML 5 data list

So it looks like just a normal text box.

However, when you click inside of the text box and type a letter, you'll see this in Firefox:

An HTML 5 data list expanded

The items on your list will appear.

When you select an item, you change the value:

A selected data list item

The HTML5 code for the above Data List is this:

<INPUT TYPE="Text" LIST="zip_codes">

<DATALIST ID="zip_codes">

<OPTION VALUE="AL" LABEL="ALABAMA">
<OPTION VALUE="AK" LABEL="ALASKA">
<OPTION VALUE="AS" LABEL="AMERICAN SAMOA">
<OPTION VALUE="AZ" LABEL="ARIZONA">
<OPTION VALUE="AR" LABEL="ARKANSAS">
<OPTION VALUE="CA" LABEL="CALIFORNIA">
<OPTION VALUE="CO" LABEL="COLORADO">
<OPTION VALUE="CT" LABEL="CONNECTICUT">

</DATALIST>

You still have an INPUT TYPE. This one is Text. Notice the LIST attribute, though. You need this to match the ID of the DATALIST tag.

DATALIST comes after the INPUT code, and has a closing DATLIST tag. For each item on your list you have a VALUE and a LABEL. The LABEL is the text that appears on the list. The VALUE is what it changes to when an item is selected. It is also the value that gets sent when the form is processed.

Note that in the Opera browser, you'll see this as soon as you click inside of the Data List:

A data list

So the VALUE and LABEL are displayed, which could be helpful.

What is not helpful is Safari's treatment of Data Lists - everything after your Data List tags will be hidden. So if you have a Submit button after a Data List, Safari users won't see it! One workaround is to put an end tag for all your OPTIONS:

<OPTION VALUE="AL" LABEL="ALABAMA"></OPTION>

The Submit button will then reappear. The Data List won't, though.

And that's it for HTML5 form elements. Try them out in different browsers, and see what works and what doesn't. Don't forget to add some CSS to liven up your form elements!

How to add Color Picker in HTML5 Forms

Another form element you can add is a Colour Picker. This will be of limited use, and only the Opera browser has implement it. The HTML code is this:

<INPUT TYPE="Color">

In the browser, it looks like this:

An HTML 5 color picker

Again, it will just end up as a plain text box, if a browser doesn't support it.

How to add Date and Time Selector box in HTML5 Forms

You can have a calendar appear when a user clicks inside of a text box. Unfortunately, only the Opera browser does this. Here's what it looks like:

An HTML 5 popup calendar

Being able to select a date like this is a terrific innovation that hopefully other browsers will implement in the future. The HTML for the above calendar is this:

<INPUT TYPE="date" value="">

The TYPE is "Date", but you can have other TYPES:

TYPE="Date"
TYPE="Month"
TYPE="Week"
TYPE="Time"
TYPE="Datetime"
TYPE="Datetime-local"

All the other browsers will just show you a blank text box in place of the TYPEs above.

How to add Spinners and Sliders in HTML5 Forms

Two other HTML5 controls you can add to forms are spinners and sliders. Sadly, though, only Opera and Chrome support the spinner. A spinner allows you to increase or decrease a number in a box by clicking little up and down arrows. They look like this in the Opera browser:

An HTML 5 spin box

The HTML code for the spinner box looks like this:

<INPUT TYPE="NUMBER" MIN="0" MAX="10" STEP="2" VALUE="6" SIZE="6">

The TYPE is "Number". The MIN and MAX are the start and end values you want for the box. In other words, a user can't go higher than 10 or lower than 0. The STEP attribute is the increase or decrease in value when you click on the arrows. In our code above, we go up in steps of 2 (2, 4, 6, 8, 10). The VALUE is the default that appears in the box when the page loads, and also the value that is returned when the form is sent. SIZE refers to how wide you want the box.

Sliders work in the Opera, Chrome and Safari browsers. They look like this:

An HTML 5 slider

You can move the slider left or right to change the value. The HTML code is this:

<INPUT TYPE="RANGE" MIN="0" MAX="10" STEP="2" VALUE="4">

The TYPE is "Range". The other attributes are the same as for the spin box.

How to add Search box in HTML5 Form

The search box, despite its name, doesn't actually search for anything. All it does is to put an X on the right hand side of a text box. You click on the X and the text in the text box disappears. It's for when you make a mistake and want to start again. The search box only works in Chrome and Safari, at the time of writing. The HTML code is this:

SEARCH: <INPUT TYPE="Search">

In Safari on a windows machine, you'll see this when you type in the text box:

An HTML 5 search box

For OS X users the above box will have rounded corners. Browsers that don't support the search box are just normal text boxes without the X. So you can TYPE="Search" instead of TYPE="Text", if you like. At least your Chrome and Safari users will be happy!

How to add URL text box in HTML5 Form

A URL is a website address, usually with http:// at the front of www. HTML 5 introduced a text box for a URL. Here is the code to try. Notice the type is now URL:

<FORM>

<INPUT TYPE="URL" PLACEHOLDER="Enter a website">

<P>
<INPUT TYPE="Submit" VALUE="Submit">

</FORM>

At the time of writing, only Firefox and Chrome support the URL text box, popping up a message when you don't type the full address (complete with http:// at the front).

How to add Email text box in HTML5 Form

HTML5 introduces an email text box. This text box checks for a valid email address. Instead of TYPE="Text" you use TYPE="Email". Here's the code to try:

<FORM>

<INPUT TYPE="Email" PLACEHOLDER="Enter your email address">

<P>
<INPUT TYPE="Submit" VALUE="Submit">

</FORM>

An older browser that doesn't recognise TYPE="Email" will just display a normal text box. So you may as well use the new email TYPE right now, if you need to.

Again, though, browser support is patchy. Only Google Chrome and Firefox support the Email text box. Even then, Firefox lets meme@memecom through, when it should be .com on the end. (Chrome picks this error up and doesn't submit the form.)

How to add Required attribute in HTML5 Forms

If you want a text box to be filled in, you can use the REQUIRED attribute:

<FORM>

<INPUT TYPE="Text" PLACEHOLDER="Enter your first name" REQUIRED>

<P>
<INPUT TYPE="Submit" VALUE="Contact Us">

</FORM>

You just type the word REQUIRED, with no equal sign or text after it.

Test it out in your browser. Don't click inside of your text box, but just click your submit button. In the latest editions of Firefox, you should see something like this:

The Required attribute on a text box

In Google's Chrome, you'll see this:

The HTML 5 Required attribute in action

So the browser has not submitted the form, but displayed a popup box asking the user to fill out the text box. Opera, Internet Explorer and Safari don't recognize the REQUIRED attribute, however, and just submit the form. So you shouldn't rely on it. Internet Explorer versions 9 and lower don't even recognise the PLACEHOLDER attribute, the only one of the big five browsers not to do so!

How to add PLACEHOLDER attribute in HTML5 Forms

There's quite a neat new attribute you can add to your text boxes called PLACEHOLDER. This is default text that disappears when you click inside a text box. Try the following:

<FORM>

<INPUT TYPE="Text" PLACEHOLDER="Enter your first name">

<P>
<INPUT TYPE="Submit" VALUE="Contact Us">

</FORM>

The word PLACEHOLDER does not have to be in capitals, as like just about every HTML element it is not case sensitive. After an equal sign, you type the text you want to appear in your text box, surrounded by quotation marks.

Save your work and test the form out in a browser (preferably Opera). When the form first loads you'll see this:

The Placeholder attribute of a A HTML 5 form

Click inside the text box and the placeholder text immediately disappears:

The Placeholder attribute on a text box

The PLACEHOLDER attribute works on all the new text boxes you are about to see. If your user has an older browser they either won't see the placeholder text at all, or it just won't disappear when they click inside the box.

How to add Hidden Element in a Form

You can have something called a Hidden Element on your form. Hidden elements are for your benefit, not your users. You can store information in a hidden element, and then pass the information to a second web page or form.

The Code for a hidden element is this:

<INPUT TYPE="Hidden" NAME="H1" VALUE="Some value">

As the name of the element implies, any data stored in the VALUE attribute does not show up on the page. However, if a viewer clicks View > Source in a browser, your code can be seen, and that includes any values you've hard-coded into the Value attribute of the Hidden element. So you wouldn't use the Hidden element to store sensitive data.

How to create Password box in HTML Forms

You can add a password box to your form. This is identical to a text box in its appearance. The only difference is that when you type in the box the characters are replaced by asterisks ( * ). It's important to remember that although a password box hides the text from prying eyes, the data is not encrypted in any way. If you use METHOD=Get instead of Post, the password would show up in the address line of the browser.

The code for a password box is this:

<INPUT TYPE="Password" SIZE="20" MAXLENGTH="8">

The MAXLEGTH attribute is the maximum number of characters that can be entered into the password text box. SIZE is how wide you want the password box to be.

How to add List boxes to the HTML Forms

You can have a list box of items on your forms, either in a drop down format or as a fixed list. Here's what the two look like on a web page:

A HTML form showing two list boxes

The HTML code for a dropdown list, the default, is this:

<SELECT>

<OPTION Value="Under 16">Under 16</OPTION>
<OPTION Value="16 to 25">16 to 25</OPTION>
<OPTION Value="26 to 40">26 to 40</OPTION>
<OPTION Value="40 to 60">40 to 60</OPTION>
<OPTION Value="Over 60">Over 60</OPTION>

</SELECT>

List boxes are called Select boxes in HTML and use the <SELECT> tag to set them up.

Each item in your list needs an OPTION tag.

<OPTION Value="Under 16">Under 16</OPTION>

You don't need the closing OPTION tag, if you don't want it, but it is here for the sake of neatness. The text you want to appear in the list, the text that people see and click on, goes after the first right pointy bracket (>). The Value is not strictly needed, either. When the form is submitted, the option the user selected will be returned to you. If the Value attribute is missing, the text itself will be returned.

If you want one of the items in your list selected by default, just choose the item and add SELECTED as an attribute. Like this:

<OPTION Value="Under 16" SELECTED>Under 16

The only difference between the drop down list and the Fixed list is one attribute in the <SELECT> tag: SIZE.

<SELECT SIZE="5">

The SIZE is the number of item in your list. If you add this attribute, you'll get a Fixed list instead of a drop down list.

If you want your users to be able to choose more than one item from the list, the attribute to add to the SELECT tag is MULTIPLE

<SELECT SIZE="5" MULTIPLE>

A user can then hold down the CTRL key and click to select more than one item.

You can add CSS styles to your list boxes, of course. Here's a style that sets font properties using the HTML selector:

SELECT {

font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 18px;

}

Now everything with the HTML SELECT tag will have its font and font size changed.

How to add Check boxes to the HTML Forms

Check boxes are used to give your users the opportunity to select more than one option from a range of options. With the Radio Buttons, you could only select one item; with check boxes, you can select them all.

The HTML for check boxes looks like this:

<INPUT TYPE="Checkbox" Name="Browser" Value ="Firefox">Firefox
<INPUT TYPE="Checkbox" Name= "Browser" Value ="Opera ">Opera

Again, you can add a label to aid in selection:

<LABEL FOR="C1">Firefox</LABEL>
<INPUT TYPE="Checkbox" Name="Browser" ID="C1" Value="Firefox">

<LABEL FOR="C2"> Opera </LABEL>
<INPUT TYPE="Checkbox" Name="Browser" ID="C2" Value="Opera">

Check boxes and Radio buttons work in a similar way, and the HTML code is similar, too. The same points made about Radio buttons apply to check boxes. Note the TYPE used, though: Checkbox.

The above code for option buttons and checkboxes would look like this in the browser:

A HTML form showing radio buttons and check boxes

How to add option buttons to the form

Option buttons are sometimes called Radio Buttons, and they force the user into choosing only one item in a list, such as a Male/Female option, or selecting a payment method.

The Option button HTML look like this:

<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="Gender" Value="Male">Male
<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="Gender" Value="Female">Female

After typing the INPUT tag, the word TYPE comes next. For Option Buttons, the type is "Radio". The NAME is definitely needed here, and note that the NAME for both in our code above is "Gender". You use the same name for each group of option buttons you are adding to your form. So if you wanted payment option buttons, the code might be this:

<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="payment" Value="CC">Credit Card
<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="payment" Value="DC">Debit Card
<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="payment" Value="PP">PayPal

This time, each radio button has the name "payment". The reason you keep the same name for each group of option buttons is simply to distinguish one group of option buttons from another.

The VALUE attribute is quite useful. When the user submits the form to you using the Submit button, these VALUES are going to be returned. If you've just got Radio1 and Radio2, you won't know (or won't remember, more likely) which option the user has selected. Manipulating values with scripts is also a lot easier if the Value is the same as the text the user sees.

If you want to have a default option button selected, use the word "Checked":

<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="payment" Value="CC">Credit Card
<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="payment" Value="DC">Debit Card
<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="payment" Value="PP" Checked>PayPal

Attaching a label to each button is very useful for your visitors. When the label is clicked it will select the option button it is named for:

<LABEL FOR="R1">Male</LABEL>
<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="Gender" ID="R1" Value="Male">

<LABEL FOR="R2">Female</LABEL>
<INPUT TYPE="Radio" Name="Gender" ID="R2" Value="Female">

In the code above, the labels are FOR the form elements called R1 and R2. We have added a corresponding ID to each option button. Notice, too, that we've deleted the text from after the > of each option button. The "Male" and "Female" text is now between the two label tags.
